I love to create! For over 20 years, I have been exploring dance through various lenses, as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and arts administrator. Currently, I am exploring the boundaries between dance and technology through the creation of innovative multimedia pieces. My work involves creative problem solving, imagination, movement invention and choreographic integrity.
I am a thinker. I love to brainstorm and I am passionate about pushing the boundaries of dance towards the future. Since 2001, I have been a full-¬time faculty member at Hillsborough Community College, where I teach modern dance, composition, music for dance, dance practicum, dance ensemble, as well as direct the department. Fortunately, my students at the college are exciting to work with me on personal projects and pursuits. As a choreographer and teacher, I have presented numerous workshops and master classes on various topics throughout the United States.
I am a dance geek! I live for dance in any form. I guess you could say I live, eat and sleep dance. I have done this since the age of 5, when I wrote down that I wanted to be a dance teacher when I grew up. I have degrees in Dance Performance and Arts Administration from Brenau University as well as a master’s degree in dance from Teachers College, Columbia University. My focus in graduate school was choreography, teaching methods and curriculum design. When I lived in NYC, I had the pleasure of working with some of the finest dance mentors, including Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown and Douglas Dunn.
I love projects! From design to execution, each new project presents the opportunity to push the limits of creativity and possibility. If you are looking to bring someone in to work with your students or if you need help organizing your arts organization, look no further. I often use my Arts Administration skills outside of the classroom. Some of the projects I have been involved with include producing videos, organizing dance festivals, writing grants, research studies etc.
I also bring a wealth of knowledge into the dance class. I have a background in Modern dance with an awareness of Anatomy and Kinesiology, Body Mind Centering and Bartenieff. In my class, students will learn to understand why their bodies move or don’t move in a particular way. My master classes are rigorous, content driven and a lot of fun. My movement is conceptually based inspired and rooted in Graham, Horton, Hawkins, Cunningham and Limon techniques. For more information check out my teaching philosophy.
I am available… for workshops, residencies and to set work. Contact me if you are interested.
